the infamous Proust questionnaire

Here goes:

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Watching a good horror film on a rainy night surrounded by those I love

What is your greatest fear?

Wasted opportunities.  That, and the butterfly effect — there is nothing more frightening than the idea that everything is just a series of random coincidences, that a chain of events can be triggered by the slightest, smallest action.  To illustrate, consider this centuries-old tale:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost;

For want of a shoe the horse was lost;

For want of a horse the battle was lost;

For the failure of battle the kingdom was lost—

All for the want of a horse-shoe nail.

Once relayed that tale to someone.  The guy was goes: “WOW. That’s really profound. Where did you read that?” I got a huge kick out of informing him: “Too Fast, Too Furious: Tokyo Drift.”

What is your most treasured possession?

An old photo of my grandpa taken at a political gathering.  A poor farmer showed up at the event, hoping one of the wealthy politicos and heavy-hitters would help him (his wife was very sick and they could no longer afford her medication).  One of the photographers advised him to wait for my grandpa, who would be the man to ask.  He did and approached my grandfather as he was walking into the event.  Sure enough, my grandpa whipped his pen out, asked for a sheet of paper, and wrote out a note instructing the best pharmacy in town to put whatever the farmer wished on his (my grandpa’s) tab, no questions asked.  The photographer snapped a photo of my grandfather, cigar in hand, writing out the note on the hood of a car, while the farmer looked on.  I love it.
